The current and future very critical teleprotection needs served with a hybrid network solution

Manila, The Philippines – Dedicated Network Partners, Alcoma, and Braid Networks have conducted a successful joint interoperability test. The test was carried out in a network environment common in power utilities equipped with teleprotection devices. In this hybrid network trial, a native transmission of TDM and a native transmission of packet based telecom services were carried over simultaneously and out of a single equipment. Dedicated Network Partners and Alcoma were both able to support this over microwave radio links and fibre optics transmission with the local systems integrator and authorized partner Braid Networks.

Teleprotection in a power utility network has very high requirements for availability. Power utilities tend to choose the proven, native TDM transmission to avoid any risks for delays in the communications chain. However, modern power utilities already have many IP based services such as their control room management, voice & video services, and other data channelling. Here, an effective packet based transmission is needed. A hybrid network solution allows the operator to run these two transmission schemes at the same time. This makes the network very efficient yet highly dependable serving both current and future very critical teleprotection needs.
