Customer-Driven Software Development for the Aurora Line

DNWP’s solution for the Aurora Line improves differential protection communications, enhances real-time monitoring, and reduces the number of devices required.

Aurora Line is a new cross-border power transmission connection jointly implemented by Fingrid and the Swedish transmission system operator Svenska kraftnät. The project strengthens electricity transmission capacity between Finland and Sweden while improving the reliability of the entire Nordic power system.

The approximately 380-kilometre transmission line and its associated substations were completed in 2025, and the connection was commissioned on 13 November 2025.

As part of the Aurora Line protection communications project, Dedicated Network Partners developed new functionalities for its Connection Master platform based on Fingrid’s requirements.

Thanks to this customer-driven product development, the traditional E1/C37.94 converter used on the Swedish side could be replaced in Finland with a software-based solution, reducing the number of devices required within the critical protection system.

Simplifying differential protection communications

According to Fingrid’s Telecommunications, Teleprotection and Linedifferential Telecommunications Expert Kimmo Karkulehto, the key benefits of the solution include cost savings, a simplified system architecture, and improved usability.

“The need to procure, install, and maintain a separate converter was eliminated, while monitoring of the connections was integrated directly into the network management system in real time. The software-based implementation enables remote management and faster troubleshooting compared to standalone devices, which often require local configuration and on-site maintenance visits,” says Karkulehto.

“DNWP listened carefully to our needs and developed a solution that eliminated the need for separate converters. As a result of our collaboration, we achieved a simpler and more manageable overall solution.”

The new solution enables real-time monitoring of system performance and potential disturbances from both ends of the connection, allowing faster detection and resolution of fault situations.

“Fingrid had a clear vision of what they wanted to achieve, and this project is an excellent example of how customer requirements can drive innovation,” says DNWP’s Managing Director, Antti Viro.

“Beyond the immediate benefits for the Aurora Line, the project demonstrates how close collaboration between customer and supplier can lead to innovative solutions that improve both operational efficiency and system reliability.”
